On Ubuntu, Python not showing output

I am using Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS and Python 3.10.12. When I write a simple script i.e.print('hello') or using ruby with puts "Hello World" and run it in a terminal I get no output. This question was originally asked on Stack overflow but was closed. so maybe that means that I should ask the question here. Thanks for any ideas.
