OpenGL applications fail in Ubuntu 22.04 through x2go (glxinfo error)

We are using a Dell PowerEdge R740xd (32-core Intel Xeon, no GPU) in an academic setting where mostly imaging analyses are performed. Users (students) connect to the server using x2go on Windows over LAN and Internet to run analyses and inspect images. We recently upgraded Ubuntu to jammy, and while x2go still works, we can no longer use programs that rely on OpenGL.

Working on the remote server directly (ssh -X), openGL applications are functional. When using x2go however, glxinfo/glxgears no longer work, returning: "couldn't find RGB GLX visual"

I've done some research but my knowledge of ubuntu/Linux is limited and I need some help reaching a conclusion.

Some specs:

inxi -F yields:

Graphics: Device-1: Matrox Systems Integrated G200eW3 Graphics driver: mgag200 v: kernel Display: server: X.Org v: 7.0.0 driver: X: loaded: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa gpu: mgag200 resolution: 1920x1018~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: N/A v: N/A

There have been sparse reports of this problem. A couple of threads stood out to me:

In this thread, the Matrox drivers are blamed. We upgraded x2goserver and mesa drivers but to no avail. Installing an old GPU is recommended in the replies: could a GPU solve the rendering issues in x2go?

Then this thread also describes the issues when using x2go, even when a GPU is installed (second reply). It gave me the idea of just using Xming for accessing the server over the Internet, but students will be restricted to command line interface, which is intimidating for some.

Another possibility is to switch protocol altogether, e.g., to NoMachine, which I've tested and works with openGL on my current Ubuntu version. Unfortunately, they charge top dollar and money is scarce in the academic sector.

I would prefer to keep using x2go because it's free and performs very smoothly (when it doesn't need 3d acceleration), but the more I'm researching this issue the more I'm losing faith that this will ever be resolved. Is anyone still using OpenGL with x2go on recent Ubuntu versions with a GPU? Or should or I jump ship to another protocol?
