Problems in Ubuntu 24.04

I have upgraded from Ubuntu 22.04 to Ubuntu 24.04 recently, and I am experiencing very strange behaviour, which I would like to confirm and ideally fix:

  • the graphical file manager is buggy: it often displays the wrong number of files in a folder, specially after recent operations. For example, extracting a zip file creates a folder and the file manager does not count the right number of elements until you open that folder (before opening, it is just a "random" number). When emptying a folder and going back to the parent, it also does not compute the right number of elements until you open that folder and go back to the parent
  • the window manager is broken: I have a very wide screen (external monitor to my laptop, with closed lid), and a lot of funny things happen:
    • whenever you move a window to the left or right, you are required to place another window on the other side (similar to how windows does it, I guess). This is unfuriating.
    • whenever I come back from screenlock, all window placements are gone: windows are centered again, and I need to re-place them. As I get a gazillion screenlocks a day, this is less than amusing
    • whenever I click on a window from a certain "application group" (let's say one of my 2 chrome windows), then the other windows in that application get put in the foreground too. Whaaaat? That means if left I have a terminal, and below it I have a chrome window, and right I have a chrome window, and I click on the right one, the terminal goes to the back. This is even more infuriating. The only way to avoid this is to minimize the window you do not want to see (or kill it with a bazooka I guess)
  • some windows in the application "dock" (Jetbrains Toolbox for example), do not open when I click them. I have to double click it for some strange reason. It's strange because it was not like that before, and because all other applications do not need double click, so I am always surprised - and since I have come to distrust this OS, I simply always assume that it is again not working.

All in all a bad experience.

I am looking for a ubuntu-based alternative for a windows manager (I need to stick to ubuntu because of reasons)
