How do I login to the ICPC World Finals Contest Image (Ubuntu) while running it live?

Background

I have been trying to follow the instructions at https://image.icpc.global/icpc2024/ImageBuildInstructions.html to run the 2024 ICPC World Finals Contest OS.

  • If you want to run the OS without actually installing it (e.g. for testing purposes), select "Try Ubuntu"; this will start the WF OS running from the installer chip.
    • NOTE: this option does not provide for OS configuration, nor does it "install" the WF OS (rather, the OS is run strictly in RAM). As a result, while this choice can be used to get an idea of what the contest desktop and similar facilities look like, it should not be assumed that the OS it runs will contain all of the features of a properly-installed WF OS.

The page mentions that it should be possible to run the OS without installing it. However, when I try it, I get stuck at an Ubuntu login screen which asks me for a Username and Password. The process does not prompt me to set any credentials before coming to this.

Prior to this, it shows a transient screen with some sort of logs that look like they might be significant.

What I have tried

  • The following Username and Password combinations:
UsernamePassword
ubuntu(empty)
ubuntuubuntu
root(empty)
rootroot
team(empty)
teamteam
icpc(empty)
icpcicpc
ubuntu.ubuntu(empty)
ubuntu.ubuntuubuntu.ubuntu
  • Based on this thread, I tried hitting Ctrl+Alt+F4 (using F1 had no effect) which brought me to a terminal interface, which also unfortunately had a login prompt, and thus didn't allow me to use any shell commands such as passwd or adduser.
