Bootable USB not booting on a UBUNTU PC

I am new to this forum so apologies if this should be linked to another thread.

I have tried all the suggestions I can find, but have not had any success.

Background: My HP desktop has UBUNTU 24.04 already installed, and I am trying to boot from a USB drive with a UBUNTU 24.04 ISO (I have some issues with drivers carrying over from the 22.04 -> 24.04 upgrade and would like to see if running the distro/different distros from the USB would not have the same issues).

When trying to boot the manufacturers logo comes up, then goes to a blank screen with a flashing _ in the top left of the screen and does not move on from there.

I have read through a lot of similar type of posts, but nothing has helped.

What I've tried:

  1. USB driveI have tried three different USB drives and two different distros. I have also tried using three different USB port with the same result.

  2. Creating the bootable USBI have used two methods to create the bootable USB. I have used RUFUS on a different windows laptop and also tried the Disks app within UBUNTU. This also did not work.

  3. Verify the Downloaded ISO

I have used the checksum verification process to verify the ISO s tried are not corrupted.

  1. Boot Options

I have tried to accessed the Boot Menu with the USB connected, but it does not open the boot menu as per the below (I am able to perform this without the USB plugged into the USB port so I can confirm I am doing this correctly.).

I have also tried setting the boot order to be from the hard drive instead, but whenever the USB is connected the PC boots to the blank screen.

"When you start your computer, access the boot menu (usually by pressing F12, ESC, or another key depending on your motherboard) and select the USB drive.

Edit Boot Parameters: When the GRUB menu appears, you can press e to edit the boot parameters. Look for the line that starts with linux and try adding the following parameters at the end:nomodesetacpi=offnolapicAfter editing, press F10 to boot."

  1. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings

My system does not have secure boot, there is an option for full boot or quick boot, I have tried both without success.

  1. Update Firmware

As far as I can see, the BIOS firmware is up to date.

  1. Trying on another PC

I have not been able to test the USB s on another PC yet, but don't suspect this to be the issue.

  1. One final point, I installed UBUNTU 22.04 2 years ago on this PC which had windows 7 installed at the time. The method used was using a bootable USB. I removed windows to only have UBUNTU. I have tried to use the same USB as was used for that install without success.

Any advise?
