Brightness will not change on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

I am having an issue where the brightness on my Lenovo Thinnkpad P51 will not change via the cmd line and the bar in the settings. More details on the laptop:

processor: Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz × 8

graphics: NV117

OS: Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS

I have been dealing with this since I installed Ubuntu months ago and haven't really cared much since I use my laptop primarily during the day but I have shifted to doing some work at night as well and it is unbearable as it is stuck at peak brightness.

I have tried numerous fixes over some time but nothing really seems to work. I apologize for the lack of details here but I do not really remember exactly what I have tried.

running ls /sys/class/backlight/ results in: nv_backlight

/etc/default/grub

reads

GRUB_DEFAULT=0GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hiddenGRUB_TIMEOUT=0GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_osi="GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
