Ubuntu 22.04.4LTS: No Sound after May 15 update

Ubuntu 22.04.4LTS on MSI x470 Gaming Plus motherboard No Sound.

Ubuntu did a major update on May 15 2024. Where I consider a major update as requiring a restart. I am not sure the exact day I let it run. When I restarted I think I upgraded my processor from a Ryzen 7 2700X to a Ryzen 9 3900X. It was several days later that I tried to play a utube video with Chrome browser and I got no sound. Sound has worked since I installed Ubuntu on a Gigabyte 990FX UD5 board 6 months or more and since I moved the Ubuntu 22.04 disk to the current motherboard months ago. I have since tried a multitude of things from Ubuntu forums and Alsa web site to get my sound back to no avail. I need help. I have included some information and I have tested my external speakers on a Windows 10 laptop.

I have a Nvidia GTX780 card that I was using to run BOINC projects on. The GPU lists as missing now. I tried all of the Ubuntu suggested drivers but as soon as the system starts I loose video output. Probably because the Nvidia driver is grabbing the video (my guess). I also tried 3 of the headless, server drivers and with those my video stayed with the HD6450 which is what I want to happen. I have since “apt purge nvidia*”. The Nvidia problem I need to fix but I want to concentrate on the sound issue first.

If I run pavucontrol it shows that my onboard Starship/Matisse controller has more port options than does the Sound configuration on Ubuntu which shows a single line with “(S/PDIF)” in it.

I have run sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload, but it fails saying the modules are still loaded:

Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-seq-midi snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-usb-audio snd-usbmidi-lib snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-ump snd-hda-codec-generic snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-intel snd-intel-dspcfg snd-intel-sdw-acpi snd-hda-codec snd-hda-core snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-timer (failed: modules still loaded: snd-usb-audio snd-usbmidi-lib snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-ump snd-hda-codec-generic snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-intel snd-intel-dspcfg snd-intel-sdw-acpi snd-hda-codec snd-hda-core snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-timer).Loading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-seq-midi snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-usb-audio snd-usbmidi-lib snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-ump snd-hda-codec-generic snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-intel snd-intel-dspcfg snd-intel-sdw-acpi snd-hda-codec snd-hda-core snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-timer.

Thanks

  1. Should I remove Alsa and reinstall it?
  2. Should I try something other than Alsa?
  3. I am lost …
